Why Did I Start a Microschool and Homeschool Hybrid Program?

Yep, that’s right! My family and I started a learner driven, multi-ethnic microschool in Snellville, GA for our son and the community. And we have decided to do school differently.

Starting a school has been something I’ve been dreaming about since before my son was even born. I have been writing down all of these dreams in my handy dandy notebook over the years.  My dad, who has been a school administrator and now a 7th grade ELA teacher, has been dreaming about this even longer than I have.

In February 2023, I told my husband… I believe with my whole heart, that the time is now to make this dream become a reality.

But our microschool isn’t like any typical traditional school. We want our son and his peers to experience a learning transformation that sparks curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. We want them to take charge of their own learning and have tons of fun while doing it.

We believe every child has dreams, passions, and purpose to discover as they grow up so they will be the next one to change the world. Every child, no matter their ethnicity, needs to see what greatness and success could look like from people who look just like them. And we are on a mission to make all of this a reality at our micro school called Kingdom Seed Christian Academy.

Listen to this All Things Are Possible Teacher Podcast episode to learn more about our new microschool.

In this episode, we will chat about:

  • Why we are starting a micro school
  • What would be my DREAM school for my son and community
  • Our vision and 5 core beliefs for our micro school
  • How we are going to transform it into a learner driven community
  • The kind of learning environment we desire to cultivate
  • What seeds of transformational learning we would like to sow in every child who attends Kingdom Seed Christian Academy
  • What makes our micro school so unique from any other school out there

Our Story That Led to Us Starting a Microschool.

As parents and grandparents of a wonderful biracial 5-year-old boy; we’ve been thinking about education a lot recently. Our miracle baby was born 8 weeks early and has special learning needs. He has been receiving special education and speech and language services since he turned 2 through the state and school district. Wonderful educators have come to our home to support our son or we have taken him to school for speech and language support.

But starting in the Fall 2023, our son will only continue to receive services through the school district if he goes to a public school.

My husband attended public school and I grew up going to Christian schools my entire life. We are a FAMILY of educators and several of us have taught in a variety of settings (public, Christian, private, and daycares). I mean it’s safe to say, we’ve seen a whole lot over the past 18 years.

We currently live in a great school district. Our son would have the best resources and support available to him and he would do “just fine”.

However, the more we thought about it, the more we wondered, should we settle for “fine”? Are we okay with him missing out from learning in a Christian environment? What about learning TRUE history about his culture? Are we okay with the excessive homework and standardized testing that start in early elementary school? Will this approach adequately prepare our son for a successful, fulfilling life in the 21st century?

dream microschool

The First Step to Starting a Microschool or Homeschooling Business is to DREAM BIG!!!

We started to dream big!

What if we could create our DREAM school for son and community?

What if instead of our son attending an institution, a school was viewed as a “community of learners”. And each learner within that community was on their own unique “All-Star” journey to discover their own God given talents, gifts, and abilities that would one day change the world.

What if God was at the center of that learning? What if all learners could see what greatness and success can look like from people who look just like them. What if they were in charge of their own learning? What if instead of only learning from a teacher, they taught themselves and learned from their peers? What if nothing short of excellence was acceptable?

Success shouldn’t be measured by worksheets or memorizing facts to pass a test. The goals for learners should be simple: find God’s calling on your life and change the world. We want this for our son and our community! And that’s why we have decided to create Kingdom Seed Christian Academy!
