The 3 Common Questions When Starting a Microschool
(Answers Inside)

So, we’re diving headfirst today into what brings us all together: the big dream of starting our own microschool or homeschooling business. We’re going to chat about how this teacher business can change the game not just for children, but for you – the educator, the visionary, the game-changer. Expect to hear some super motivating stories. And let’s tackle some of the common fears and myths that might be holding you back from building something spectacular.

Let’s start with a story that’s close to my heart. Imagine living in a city where there’s a wide variety of public, private, Christian, and daycare options, but none of them meet your child’s needs.

Or imagine living in a small town where education options are limited. Then, one teacher or parent starts to dream big. They dream of a learning space where every child’s curiosity is nurtured. That teacher or parent took the leap, faced challenges head-on, and now runs a thriving microschool where students from diverse backgrounds come together to explore, learn, and grow. This isn’t just a story; it’s a reality for countless educators who dared to dream.

Question #1: How Do I Start a Microschool?

This is by far the most common question I get asked by teachers and parents. The idea of starting a microschool or homeschooling business might make you a little nervous. It might be new to you. A microschool was definitely new to me and my family.

When we decided to start a microschool back in February 2023, I began researching non-traditional schooling options the summer before that. I typed into Google:

“non-traditional schooling options”

“homeschool hybrid options”

“how to start my own school”

And guess what kept popping up for me?

START A MICROSCHOOL

A microschool? What is that? I even asked my Dad, who’s been a teacher and administrator for over 40 years, if he knew what a microschool was. But nope, he said he’d never even heard of it. And that’s when my research began. I really wanted to know what a microschool was because if this could be the solution for my child’s education, then I’ve got to know a much as I can about it.

I know exactly how you’re feeling. In the beginning, I didn’t know what a microschool was or how to start one either. But, I don’t want that to be the reason why you don’t get started right now. Question #2: What are the Legal Requirements to Start a Microschool?

The next common question or fear that often comes up when starting a microschool or homeschooling business is the legal stuff. It can be kind of scary and what if you do something wrong? I hear ya.

Now, make sure you subscribe to the All Things Are Possible Teacher Podcast because there will be new episodes all about how to navigate the legal stuff. So stay tuned for that. But for now here are a few questions, I want you to answer to help guide your research.

  1. Are you doing an online or in-person program?
  2. Do you want to do it in your home? If so, do you lease or own your home? Is your home part of an HOA?
  3. Have you decided on what type of business structure you want? Such as: Sole proprietorship, Limited Liability Company (LLC), Doing Business As (DBA), or Non-Profit. Start researching each of these to see which one you want to be.

Once you answer these questions, you’ll be on the right path to successfully setting up your teacher business the right way.

Question #3: Can I make consistent money with a microschool or homeschooling business?

The quick answer is OH YEAH!!! Did you see the photo above. That’s my microschool journey. After just 1 month of marketing our new microschool, we enrolled 3 new learners and that’s with NO paid advertising.

The nice thing about starting your own microschool or homeschooling business is that YOU decide what kind of revenue structure you want for your business.

There are 2 ways you can make money in your teacher business. There is ONE-TIME revenue and RECURRING revenue.

One-time revenue is when a teacher or parent buys your product or service ONE TIME. Then, there is recurring revenue. This is where a teacher or parent continues to buy your product or service over and over again. It is not a one-time purchase.

My most favorite revenue structure for my teacher business is RECURRING revenue, because this is money I can count on every single month. It’s consistent, I know it’s coming. I can depend on it. This is how I structured our microschool and homeschool hybrid, tutoring business, and coaching business.

So can you make consistent money at this type of business. Absolutely because you can set up your business to receive RECURRING revenue every month like clockwork.

Now that you have a starting place, I want you to DREAM BIG for your future microschool or homeschooling business. Because your dreams matter.
