These 4th Grade I Can Statements and Assessment Checklists include everything you need to be sure you're teaching the right narrative writing strategies that complement your writing.
These I Can statements and/or assessment checklists can be sent home BEFORE you begin a narrative unit so students are aware of the big goals you will be teaching.
Then, you can send home the assessment checklists AFTER you complete a narrative unit (or at report card testing) to keep parents updated on the writing goals their students have mastered and what they still need to work on.

Narrative Writing Skills Included:

I can write a beginning in which I showed what was happening and where, getting readers into the world of the story.

I can show how much time went by with words and phrases that mark time such as just then and suddenly (to show when things happened quickly) or after a while and a little later (to show when a little time passed).
