This resource is PERFECT for anyone who wants a way to help their students independently practice strategies for strong overall structure of writing, leads, transitions, organization, endings, elaboration, craft, spelling, and punctuation.
It follows many of the strategies found in Lucy Calkins Writing Programs (Teachers College) but can be used for any and all writing programs.

Narrative Writing Skills Included:
– overall structure of writing (I told about when I did something)
– leads/beginnings (I tried to make a beginning)
– transitions (I put my pages in order, and used words such as “and, then, and so”)
– organization (I wrote 3 or more pages)
– endings (I found a way to end my story)
– elaboration/details (I made pictures in my mind and put them on the page, had details in my pictures and words)
– craft (I used labels and words to give more details)
– spelling (I use words and chunks of words, I spell word wall words correctly and use the word wall to help me spell words)
– punctuation (I end sentences with punctuation, use capital letter for important names, use commas in important dates and when I'm making lists)
Information Writing Skills Included:
– overall structure of writing (I taught my readers about a topic)
– leads/beginnings (I named my topic and the beginning and got my reader's attention)
– transitions (I told different parts about my topic on different pages)
– organization (I told about my topic part by part)
– endings (I wrote an ending)
– elaboration/details (I put facts in my writing)
– craft (I used labels and words)
– spelling (I use words and chunks of words, spell word wall words correctly, use the word wall to help me spell words when I get stuck)
– punctuation (I end sentences with punctuation, use capital letter for important names, use commas in important dates and making lists)
Opinion Writing Skills Included:
– overall structure of writing (I told, drew, and wrote a whole story)
– leads/beginnings (I told what happened first)
– transitions (I put my pages in order)
– organization (I have a page for the beginning, middle, and end)
– endings (I have a page that shows what happens last)
– elaboration/details (I told who was there, what they did, and how they felt)
– craft (I drew and wrote some details)
– spelling (I can read it, wrote a letter for the sounds I hear, use the word wall)
– punctuation (I put spaces between words, use lowercase letters, use capital letters to start sentences)
